Botswana Academy of Sciences hosts its first Meeting

The first planning meeting for the Botswana Academy of Sciences was held on April 1, 2015 at the Centre for Continuing Education at UB main campus. The meeting was attended by academics and professionals from the University of Botswana (UB), Ministry of Infrastructure Science and Technology (MIST), Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA), Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and BITRI. BITRI serves as the Secretariat to the Academy.

In his remarks the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo said the idea to establish a Science Academy in Botswana is important as it will give Botswana an opportunity to have a think tank, a practice that is in line with what is normally the norm in countries with advanced economies.

The Founding Chairperson of Botswana Academy of Sciences, Professor Motsoptse Modisi, facilitated the review of the Draft BAS Constitution envisioned to be used as a governing document for the BAS. The forum was also informed that the Academy will be registered under the Societies Act.
