Board of Directors

BITRI is run by a Board of Directors each elected for a term of three years. They are appointed by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology. The Board of Directors is responsible for the strategic direction of the organization. They comprise of members from different disciplines such as academia, mining, stock exchange and research.

The day to day running of the organization is lead by the Chief Executive Officer, together with the executive management. The executive management comprise of two Executive Directors and three Directors.

Board Meetings

Board meetings are held quarterly and the schedule is drawn at the beginning of the financial year. The Board has appointed a number of special board sub-committees to assist in the discharge of its duties.

Professor Sesae Felicity Mpuchane

Board Chairperson

Professor Sesae Felicity Mpuchane has been appointed Chairperson of the BITRI Board of Directors with effect from 1st June 2017.

Prof Mpuchane is a retired Professor of Microbiology with a career spanning over thirty-five years in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Botswana (UB) – which she joined in 1974 as a lecturer and worked her way up to Full Professorship at UB. At the time she joined, it was called the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Prof Mpuchane has a BA in Biology from Barnard College (Columbia University), a Master’s Degree in Microbiology from Ohio University and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.

Prof Mpuchane is an accomplished scientist with over forty refereed journal articles and over sixty conference papers/ proceedings. Her team at UB produced numerous booklets on food safety of some food commodities in English, Setswana and Kalanga languges. The Women in Science Committee she chaired produced seven booklets encouraging girls to study STEM courses. She has also presented papers in many fora on the same topic.

Amongst her many achievements, Prof Mpuchane has been part of a committee that developed the infrastructure for the Science Faculty at UB; being part of a team that established a Regional MSc and PhD programme in Applied Food and Environmental Microbiology; coordinator of the UB-Women in Science project which was aimed at encouraging school girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); chaired the Task Force that resulted in the establishment of the Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST); and later served as BIUST Founding Executive Chairperson for the first two years of its development.

Prof Mpuchane has also served in other capacities, amongst others, as the founding Chairperson of the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) as well as Board of Directors of other key organisations in Botswana. She currently serves as the Chairperson of the Associated Fund Administrators (AFA).

Dr Ditshupo Ecco Maje

Dr Ditshupo Ecco Maje is a distinguished Electrical Engineer and academic with a career spanning almost twenty years. He is currently a Telecommunications Lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Botswana. Dr Maje holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees both in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, renamed Missouri University of Science and Technology, (USA) as well an MSc degree in Radio, Television, and Digital Communication from Vinnitsa National University of Technology in Ukraine, in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

Dr Maje’s career span covers amongst others, his role as Signals & Telecommunications Engineer at Botswana Railways and he also served as Head of Department for Communications  at the same organisation. He has over the years, served as a Board of Director for Botswana Technology Centre, the then Botswana Telecommunications Authority (BTA) and Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).

Mr Baitshepi Tebogo

Mr Baitshepi Tebogo is General Manager, Corporate Services at the Public Procurement & Asset Disposal Board. He holds an MBA from the University of Botswana as well as MSc. Financial Management from Heriot-Watt University Scotland. Mr Tebogo previously served as an Internal Auditor at the Ministry of Finance & Development Planning before joining the Botswana Meat Commission as Senior Accountant.

Mr Tebogo has served in several other capacities at the Botswana Accountancy College before being appointed as Head of Programmes at Institute of Development Management (Botswana). Mr Tebogo is also a member of a number of professional bodies such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants-(ACCA, UK), Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT, UK) Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) UK and he is also a fellow Certified Public Accountant at BICA, Botswana.

Dr Ronald Tshelametse

Dr Ronald Tshelametse is a Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Science in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Botswana. He holds an MBA from the University of Botswana, a Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis and Computing from the University of Manchester, MSc in Numerical Analysis and Computing from the University of Manchester and a BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Botswana obtained in 1992.

Dr Tshelametse has vast experience emanating from his roles in different directorship positions in the tourism and agriculture sectors. He is the current Coordinator and Chair of MSc in Mathematics Program Development Committee. He has previously served in the Botswana Journal of Technology Review Team, Journal of Optimal Control, Applications and Methods and Pula Journal. Dr Tshelametse is also a founding member of Botswana Swimming Sport Association. An avid supporter of the community through Business Mini Symposiums and always emphasizes the importance of numeracy and algorithmic approach in sustaining a business and accumulation of wealth.

Dr Tshelametse’s research activity and interests also include his role as Chair of the Departmental Industry Outreach Committee, a structure that is actively engaged on how to make mathematics and science research relevant to industry and national needs. Dr Tshelametse has published over twelve peer reviewed publications in the field of numeracy. His other interests lie in Air Water research and alternative water management practices as well as Science Entrepreneurship.

Mr Oganeditse Marata

Mr Oganeditse Marata is founder of and senior partner at Marata,Molefe Attorneys. He holds an LLB from the University of Botswana. Senior Counsel OGB Marata was admitted into the courts of the Republic of Botswana as an Attorney in 1985 and Joined the Prosecutions Division of the Attorney General where he commenced representation of the State in criminal matters. Mr Marata has extensive and varied experience and knowledge on the diverse fields of the law. He is a Member of the Law Society of Botswana.

He has served in various Committees that include the Adjudication Committee and the Appeals Board of the Selebi Phikwe Town Council and is currently the Chairperson of the Licensing Committee. He is a member of the interim committee for the formation of the Local Chamber of Commerce and a member of Business Botswana. He is also a current member of the Board of Directors of the National Development Bank and its associate committees.

Ms. Tekolo Modungwa

Member

Ms Tekolo Modungwa is a renowned Human Resource and Organisation Development practitioner currently the Managing Director of People Management Consultants. A distinguished human resource practitioner, Ms Modungwa brings a wealth of experience in the HR field and her experience is expected to boost the BITRI Board’s human resource expertise.

Ms Modungwa holds a BA Public Administration and Political Science from the University of Botswana (UB) and MA in Administrative Sciences from the Post Graduate School of Administrative Sciences in Germany. Her career path includes distinguished services locally and internationally in several sectors, amongst them public service, commercial bank sector as well as joint venture diamond mining. She has worked as a Management Trainer at Botswana Institute of Administration and Commerce and she has also held a number of roles at Standard Chartered Bank Botswana spanning over a 10-year period. Ms Modungwa also worked for Debswana in the HR function where she started as HR Manager - Development and was seconded to Botswana Diamond Valuing Company (BDVC); a subsidiary of Debswana then as HR Manager and she ascended to the role of Executive Director-HR at DTC International in London. She was the Change Manager of the transition project from BDVC to DTC Botswana. At the end of this project, she assumed the role of Group Talent Manager back at Debswana.

Ms Modungwa has served in a number of Boards, including Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), Public Enterprises Evaluation & Privatisation Agency PEEPA, Botswana Post and Botswana Meat Commission (BMC).

Ms Mercy Bothojwame Conlon

Member

Ms Mercy Bothojwame Conlon is a Strategy and Business Improvement Consultant at Debswana. She previously held the position of IT Manager, Service Delivery also at Debswana. Her career span covers fields such as ICT, Banking, Mobile telecommunications at various institutions including Orange Botswana, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation and Botswana Savings Bank just to mention a few.

She holds a Master of Science degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby and a Master of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in the United States of America.

Mr Edwin Elias

Mr Edwin Elias is a Senior Manager, Ore Processing for Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines at Debswana Mining Company. He is based at Orapa Mine. He holds an Executive Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Toronto, Canada.

He has also completed the Emerging Leaders Program from the London Business School in the United Kingdom. In April 2011 he was seconded to DeBeers Canada - Victor Mine, a remote based open pit diamond mine. He was assigned to his current position after completion of his secondment.

Mr Mao Segage was previously at Tati Nickel mine holding the position of Director Finance before joining Botswana Railways. His current position at Botswana Railways is Director Finance and Corporate Services and his span of responsibilities are financial management, budget control, information technology, human resources, procurement and legal services functions.

Professor Shedden Masupe

Chief Executive Officer

Prof Shedden Masupe assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) with effect from 1st October 2017. Prof Masupe joined BITRI in 2014 as Executive Director – Technologies from BIUST. Prof Masupe graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Physics from Mount Allison University, Canada, and a BSc Eng., Electrical Engineering (Communications and Fields) from University of New Brunswick, Canada. He also has an MSc in Electronics Engineering (Digital Systems) from Cardiff University, and a PhD in Electronics Engineering attained from Edinburgh University in the United Kingdom.

Prof Masupe is a highly driven and experienced executive with a sound track record acquired over 20 years leading academic and research teams towards fulfilment of corporate strategy objectives and organizational mandates and he also possesses strong competencies in the areas of Project Management, Research Leadership and other Support Services. Prof Masupe is a versatile ICT professional who has the ability to impact an organization through Cultural Change and Enterprise Architecture. His leadership pedigree is evidenced by strategic level participation in a number of executive committees of reputable technology and academic organizations such as BoFiNet, BUAN and UB. He has provided mentorship to professionals in the ICT field, lead research and teaching activities at UB as Head of Department of Electrical Engineering Department as well as Associate Dean of College of Engineering at BIUST.

As Executive Director – Technologies, Prof Masupe’s responsibilities included leading, managing, directing, coordinating and supervising all research and development undertaken by BITRI in the areas of Information Systems & Technologies, Energy, and Electronics & Communications as well as directing the support functions of Information & Technology and Design divisions.
