BITRI hosted a five-person delegation from the Poverty Eradication unit under Office of the President on Friday April 17, 2015. The main objective of the tour was to afford the delegation headed by Coordinator of the Poverty Eradication Unit, Mr. Olebile Gaborone to have an appreciation of the Kgalagadi Sand Building Blocks/ Bricks (KSBB) project, with the view that the bricks could potentially be used to construct houses for the underprivileged in some parts of the country.
The delegation was welcomed by the Chief Executive Officer, Professor Nelson Torto, Management and members of the Building Materials division in the BITRI Boardroom before they were taken on a familiarisation tour of the KSBB project facilities and sites. The BITRI team comprising members of the Building Materials Science unit walked the delegation through the KSBB project, covering a site visit at the Processed Raw Materials Bays, demonstrations of Blending Processes, Feeding the mix into the Press, Extruding, and Handling of the blocks, Demo walls built of KSBB blocks, testing of the blocks at the Building Materials Laboratory, and a tour of the KSBB demo house in Gaborone West Phase 1.
The familiarisation tour was concluded at the BITRI Boardroom, with the BITRI team and Poverty Eradication unit committing to holding advanced talks paving way for the possibility of the latter adopting the KSBB technology for construction of houses in several areas in Botswana.
